A 53-year-old man died of injuries early Thursday morning after being struck by a vehicle while crossing General Screven Way in Hinesville Wednesday, January 15, 2014.
According to Hinesville police, a man was crossing General Screven Way at South Main Street when he was struck by a 1999 Hyundai, driven by Guy Isaacs. The victim was rushed to Memorial University Medical Center where he later succumbed to fatal internal injuries.
Initial reports have focused on the victim's dark clothing rather than the driver's failure to notice and stop for a pedestrian crossing the roadway.
This disturbing trend to blame the victim is particularly troubling given the staggering number of recent distracted driving fatalities throughout the state. Clearly, a conscious shift needs to be made to demand drivers stay alert and city planners provide adequate lighting and pedestrian safety measures in high-pedestrian-traffic areas.
Advocates for pedestrian rights and personal injury attorneys at The Murray Law Firm are investigating this accident and questioning whether distraction, speed or impairment may have contributed to this tragedy.
Should Mr. Isaacs be found at fault in this incident, the family of the victim may elect to hold him civilly liable for the wrongful death of their family member. Such a substantial claim will not only demand justice for this tragic loss, but also serve as a clearly-needed reminder to all Georgia drivers of the perils of distracted driving. This claim will also call on city officials to invest in additional pedestrian safety measures, such as street lighting and crossing signals, perhaps sparing many other lives.
