One person was reportedly shot and injured at the Super 8 Motel in Augusta Wednesday, March 18, 2015.

According to WJBF News, Richmond County authorities responded to a shooting at the Super 8 Motel on Gordon Highway around 4:30am Wednesday morning. At least one person was reportedly transported to the hospital with injuries. The victim’s condition has not been released.

Police have not yet identified the victim, a suspect or motive in the shooting.

Our Legal Take

As police continue to investigate, The Murray Law Firm is questioning whether a motel security lapse may have contributed to this horrific shooting.

Was the gunman a guest of the Super 8 Motel and, if not, how did the shooter gain entry to the property? What access-controls and security measures, such as key card controlled entry, surveillance cameras, bright lighting, and security patrols, were in place to protect guests at the time of the shooting?

Have there been previous incidents of violence on or near property and, if so, what security precautions were implemented by the motel owner and management to deter future crime?

By law, property owners are required to protect all guests legally on premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the Super 8 Motel owner and management company be found at fault for failing in this duty, the victim may elect to pursue a legal claim for any injuries suffered as a consequence. Claims of this magnitude would not only demand the Super 8 Motel re-evaluate security measures, but also serve as a grave warning to other Augusta hotel owners.

Photographs and a thorough inspection of the scene will need to be performed immediately on behalf of the victim before any evidence, such as surveillance footage or security logs, may be repaired, damaged or destroyed. The victim should retain an experienced premises liability firm without delay to ensure all evidence is preserved and his best interests protected.
