Local News

A shooting and stabbing outside the BFE Bar and Grill reportedly claimed the life of 28-year-old Edward Daniel Newhouse and left another critically injured in Waynesboro Friday night, February 27, 2015.

According to WJBF News, an altercation between Mr. Newhouse and another man erupted into a violent stabbing and shooting outside the BFE Bar and Grill, on Hancock Landing Road, around 10:30pm Friday.

Authorities apparently discovered Mr. Newhouse at the scene suffering from fatal stab wounds. He was reportedly transported to Georgia Regents Medical Canter, where he later succumbed to injuries. Media reports indicate the other man involved in the dispute left the scene, but crashed nearby. He was apparently transported to Georgia Regents Medical Center with gunshot wounds and listed in critical but stable condition.

Police are still searching for details and a motive in the harrowing exchange.

Our Legal Take

As police continue to investigate, The Murray Law Firm is questioning whether a fatal security lapse at the BFE Bar and Grill may have contributed to this tragedy.

What efforts were made by the bar staff to deescalate the situation and safely and separately remove both parties from the premises before it could erupt into violence? Were police called at the start of the initial dispute?

Was alcohol a factor in the dispute and, if so, do receipts indicate whether either patron was over-served?

As the details of this investigation continue to emerge, The Murray Law Firm suggests it is possible that the owner and management of BFE Bar and Grill may have failed in their duty to protect their patrons. Under Georgia law, bar and restaurant owners are required to protect all patrons legally on premises from any foreseeable harm. Should they fail in this duty, they may be held civilly liable for any injuries or deaths, which occur as a consequence.
