Abercorn Extension at Rio Road, Savannah, GA
21-year-old Jessica Brown was reportedly struck and injured by an alleged DUI driver while driving on Abercorn Extension early Monday morning, September 22, 2014.
According to Savannah Morning News, Ms. Brown was traveling westbound in the center lane of Abercorn Extension, alongside a construction zone, shortly after 2:00am Monday morning. Construction crews working on an asphalt project had closed the outer two lanes of the roadway, marking their work zone with construction barrels.
A westbound Ford Explorer was apparently traveling behind Ms. Brown at a high rate of speed and struck several of the construction barrels before finally crashing into the rear of Ms. Brown’s Nissan Versa. The Nissan overturned, striking a steam roller. Ms. Brown was transported to Memorial University Medical Center with injuries. Her condition is unknown.
Per media reports, the driver of the Ford Explorer was stopped by construction crew members at the scene. It is unclear whether he was attempting to flee the scene prior to the crew’s involvement. The driver is allegedly facing charges, including driving under the influence.
Our Legal Take
The Murray Law Firm is following the horrific accident closely. Advocates for the victims of impaired drivers, the firm believes Ms. Brown may elect to hold the allegedly impaired driver civilly liable for her injuries. Claims of this magnitude will send a gravely needed message to Georgia drivers on the perils of impaired driving. Such claims will also call on local and state officials to crack down on impaired drivers and impaired driving education programs throughout the state.
As insurance companies are all too often more concerned with limiting their own financial exposure than protecting the long-term needs of victims, it is crucial Ms. Brown retain an experienced personal injury firm without delay to ensure all evidence, such as blood test results and traffic surveillance footage, is preserved and her best interests are protected.
